After supper on Friday night, we were sitting in our family room watching a movie. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw something moving on the deck just outside the window.
A pair of gray foxes (Urocyon cinereoargenteus), actually, although I only got photos of one.
Once he spotted me watching him, he became very skittish. We watched each other for perhaps five minutes; he maintained a safe distance and kept moving, pausing only for a second or two. (I stayed inside.)
Gray foxes are very common in our area, but typically stay in wooded areas away from humans. I had heard that a den existed in our neighborhood, but I hadn’t seen any evidence until today.
I hope he stays away from our baby rabbits.
